How/Where do you get true military "surplus"?

I have been to army surplus stores, I have found them online and such as well. what i would like to know is how these stores get their supplies. How do you get the surplus stuff straight from the military?

1. Be careful, many supposed surplus iteams are seling knock offs. It use to be that people would go in and sell their gear and or the owners would go to military auctions.
2. if you send them a letter usually they will send you a tank or maybe a bazooka if your lucky or something cool. These surplus stores get stuff from the companies that make it for the military, the military usually uses stuff till it breaks and then they throw it away
