Military Uniform Store

Navy base life vs. Air Force base life (e.g. community, family life)?

Hi, I'm using my girlfriends account and i was really wondering if i can get a *side-by-side comparison of the two. I was raised a Navy brat for 15 years. So I know that one pretty well from that perspective, but i don't know much about USAF life. I thought the navy brat life was great and the community was really tightly-knit. Whenever we would go to air force bases, sure they had nicer stores and whatnot, but rarely did i ever see anyone walking around like i did at my base. My base was very beautiful and diverse, while this certain air force base was pretty uniform and bland. (i live in yokosuka, jpn. and the AF base i'm talking about is Yokota, jpn.) I'm just talking about these two because the other ones, i was too little to remember. other than Travis AFB in CA. Also I'd like to know how day-to-day life is in general for each as an OFFICER. nothing too specific just generalizations are fine. what the general differences are between the two and what they have to do. I'm asking because i'm torn between the two. My plans are to be an officer, for at least 1 service term, in either. I find the military will not only be a great experience and fulfill my life-long dreams, but will be an excellent catalyst to getting me a great job in the civilian world. In the Navy I'd like to go through the NUPOC program and be a SWO or a submariner. In the USAF, I haven't quite pin-pointed it yet, but I was leaning towards things like the space and missile operations side or being an ABM. I went into AFROTC two semesters ago wanting to fly f22s but found flying isn't all that great and so i dropped. I have a girlfriend and we do plan to have our future together and start a family. Also I'm majoring in mechanical engineering. Just throwing that in there for background information. As far as deployments, i know now that with the war in iraq closing and afghanistan(inland!) becoming more prevalent, and with the air force being more expidetionary, the navy and the air force should be about even, depending on the rate/AFSC. 4-6 months? thanks a lot in advance! i made a typo. i do not LIVE in yokosuka anymore. I liveD there. haha sorry about that.

  1. Air force -Stable feet on the ground duty.Navy-sea duty, sooner or later. Not great when you have family.
  2. we were stationed in Yoko too and thought he same thing about Yokota.. too prim and proper. had a Girlfriend live in Yokota as a civilian contractor dependent(after living in Yoko as a Navy spouse the same time we were there) and found the atmosphere was VERY uptight and the spouses and whatnot were NOT very friendly.outgoing at all and would never leave base. they did have a better commissary..and an A&W....
  3. Navy: For sea duty, you'll be on the coast obviously. Let's take a look: -San Diego, CA -Bremerton, WA -Pearl Harbor, HI -Kings Bay, GA -Norfolk, VA -Bangor, ME -Rota, Spain -Sicily, Italy -Yokosuka, Japan -Sasebo, Japan -Diego Garcia -Guam -There's a few more. Sea duty isn't bad at all. I just got off four years there, and it wasn't too bad, but it's all on how you make it. For shore duty, its damn near EVERYWHERE (depending on what rate you pick). The Air Force has bases all over the place, my particular favorite is Davis-Monthan in Tucson, Arizona. You do risk on going to some garbage places like South Dakota or West Virginia, basically states that really don't exist anymore....
